Our approach

Health and safety is built into everything we do. Our approach focuses on three principles:

Educate

Ensuring everyone understands risks, responsibilities, and safe working practices.

Enforce

Applying clear standards consistently across all sites and activities

Measure

Monitoring performance to drive continuous improvement.

Active in the Industry

To stay at the forefront of best practice and contribute to raising standards across the sector, we actively participate in industry bodies, including:

  • Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
  • The Mineral Products Association (MPA)
  • Institute of Quarrying

A Culture of Shared Responsibility

Health and Safety at Day Group is a collective responsibility. While senior leadership is fully committed and accountable, our culture is collaborative, with input from the teams closest to the work, and there are two key factors which contribute towards this:

Communication

We believe that strong, two-way communication is essential. It ensures risks are understood, any concerns are raised early, and improvements are embedded effectively across the business.

Processes

Clear processes are in place for reporting near misses and incidents, and supporting continuous learning and improvement.

Safety From the Top Down

To ensure that safety is embedded at every level of the organisation, our leadership team plays a visible and active role in promoting safe behaviours and reinforcing accountability across the business:

Executive Committee members receive “Visible felt Leadership” (VFL) leadership training to strengthen ownership, accountability and to improve our safety.

Front-line managers undertake Health and Safety training to enable them to lead teams safely day to day.

Our Managing Director carries out regular site walkarounds with the Group Head of Health and Safety, and Sustainability.

Visible Felt Leadership

Visible Felt Leadership is central to how we bring our safety culture to life. It goes beyond setting policies, it is about leaders being present, engaged, and actively demonstrating their commitment to safety
in day-to-day operations.

Spending time on site, engaging directly with teams, and understanding real working conditions.

Listening to feedback, acting on concerns, and recognising good practice.

Leading by example, reinforcing that safety is a priority in every decision.

Creating an environment where people feel confident to speak up.

By making leadership visible and meaningful, we build trust, strengthen accountability, and ensure that
our safety standards are not only understood, but consistently lived across the business.

Interactive
Safety Tours

Our Interactive Safety Tours are a key part of how we engage teams and continuously improve standards on the ground. These tours are not inspections, they are collaborative, hands-on opportunities to identify risks and share knowledge.

During these tours, we work together to:

  • Review working environments and identify potential hazards in real time
  • Discuss safe practices and explore opportunities for improvement
  • Reinforce key messages from toolbox talks and training programmes
  • Encourage open dialogue and shared problem-solving

Training and Continuous Improvement

We believe strong health and safety performance starts with informed, engaged people. Through regular toolbox talks, operational updates, frequent safety communications, and internal training, we keep health and safety front of mind across the business.

By sharing knowledge, adopting best practice, and embracing new ways of working, we continue to strengthen our standards. Our Health and Safety team supports this approach by helping colleagues build the skills and confidence needed to work safely every day.
