What is IBAA?

Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) is a manufactured aggregate produced from the nonhazardous ash generated by the energyfromwaste process.

IBAA supports sustainable construction by reducing landfill, lowering reliance on quarried materials, and contributing to a more circular construction economy.

Day Group has played a leading role in the development, processing, and assurance of IBAA, helping to establish it as a credible, highperforming construction material.

As a manufactured aggregate, when correctly produced, IBAA offers predictable performance characteristics and consistency, making it a practical and responsible approach to selecting materials.

How is IBAA Manufactured?

The manufacture of IBAA follows a controlled, multistage process designed to ensure quality, safety, and performance.

Recovery

IBA is recovered from Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities.

Separation

The IBA is separated from any ferrous and non-ferrous metal contaminants which may be in the material, which are then sorted for recycling.

Maturation

The IBA is processed and left to mature.

Quality Control

Now the IBA is graded to the required aggregate specification and undergoes quality control testing prior to being supplied.

Day Group Processing Capability and Investment

Day Group has made sustained investment in IBAA processing capability, developing purposedesigned plant operations to support consistent quality, increased capacity, and reliable supply.

This includes investment in advanced processing technology, materials handling, and quality control systems.

The opening of the Wellingborough in 2024 alongside operations at Avonmouth, Brentford, and Greenwich, marks a significant milestone in Day Group’s infrastructure investment, strengthening processing capability and supporting regional supply.

Benefits of Recycled and Manufactured Aggregates

When produced to recognised standards, recycled and manufactured aggregates deliver reliable performance while supporting sustainability targets and responsible procurement policies.

Their environmental and operational benefits, including:

  • Reduced demand for primary aggregate extraction
  • More cost-effective than primary alternatives
  • Diversion of material from landfill
  • Lower embodied carbon associated with raw material sourcing
  • Effective use of materials already within the resource cycle

Volumetric Efficiency: Less Tonnage,
Fewer Lorry Movements

A key advantage of Ecoblend products is their volumetric efficiency. Engineered to perform by volume rather than weight, less tonnage is required to achieve the same engineering outcome compared with traditional primary aggregates. This results in:

Less material required

Fewer vehicle movements

Lower transport related emissions

Improved site logistics and programme efficiency

Standards, Quality, and Assurance

Out IBAA is produced within robust quality and environmental management systems. Comprehensive testing, certification, and compliance processes underpin its manufacture, providing confidence in technical performance, consistency of supply, and regulatory compliance.

Clear specifications, traceability, and ongoing assurance ensure our IBAA products are suitable for use where safety, reliability, and defined standards are essential.
